Ring Metals Guide Platinum

About platinum

Platinum is highly versatile and can be crafted into various designs to suit a wide range of tastes. It is the ideal choice for those seeking timeless engagement rings that will last beyond fashions and trends. This naturally occurring white metal is rarer than gold and has become increasingly popular in jewellery due to its attractive appearance.

The word "platinum" comes from "platino," which means "little silver" in Spanish. Both metals are comparable for their lustrous, bright, and colourless appearance. Platinum was discovered in South America around 1735 but evidence suggests its use dates back to 1200 BC in Egypt as part of gold alloys. The Spanish also found platinum in Mexico during the 1550s, however, it was considered unworkable at the time and largely discarded.

It was not until the late 1700s that Europeans started using platinum metal within luxury items such as buttons for expensive clothing. Working with platinum was challenging due to its high melting point, making it difficult to craft intricate jewellery pieces until the turn of the 20th century when high-powered jewellery torches were invented.

Platinum is amongst the rarest metals worldwide and has a pure silver-toned appearance. Typically, platinum used for engagement rings contains 95% platinum and 5% other precious metals like palladium, copper or rhodium - referred to as '950 platinum'.

Platinum Ring Inspiration

Being a colourless metal, stunning platinum is perfect for diamond engagement rings. Its high reflectivity enhances the sparkle of diamonds, making them appear bright and icy. Unlike other metals such as yellow or rose gold, which can pick up warm tones from the diamond, platinum keeps your diamond looking colourless and brilliant over time. It is no wonder that platinum has remained the most popular choice for engagement rings since its first use, it truly does stand the test of time!

Platinum is a luxurious metal that appeals to discerning consumers who want only the best for their jewellery. This precious metal is famous for its purity, durability and richness. It is the ultimate white metal and makes coloured gemstones look their very brilliant best. Platinum jewellery is typically 90-95% pure and is usually alloyed with small amounts of other metals to increase its durability.

Platinum's shimmering silvery-white appearance and strength make it an excellent choice for showing off diamonds and gemstones. While platinum does suit different colours of gemstones and diamonds, it looks especially beautiful with blue gems like sapphires. Platinum is also a popular option for bespoke jewellery. Being such a rare and durable metal that has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its strength and versatility. When creating a bespoke piece with platinum, you have the chance to choose from a variety of designs and styles that will suit your personal taste. Whether you prefer simple and elegant designs or something more intricate, platinum can be crafted into stunning pieces that will stand the test of time. So if you are looking for a timeless engagement ring that will transcend fashions and changing trends, then platinum is definitely worth considering!
