How to Design a Bespoke Engagement Ring in Antwerp
A family jeweller in Antwerp’s diamond district since 1937.
Most people visit a jeweller’s shop and look at some rings in display cabinets to find the right one for them. While this will work for some couples, to make sure you get a ring that feels personal to you and is created around your preferences, we recommend designing your own bespoke engagement ring.
Philippe Harold has been established in Antwerp since 1937. As a family jeweller in the centre of Antwerp’s diamond district, we draw on four generations of experience. We do not mass-produce bespoke pieces. Each one begins with a conversation and ends with something that is created for one person.
Don’t worry if you have never designed a ring before! It’s much easier than you think. Here is a breakdown of how we would create your bespoke ring:
Why create a bespoke engagement ring?
A pre-made ring can also be personalised. With bespoke rings, you can choose the diamond, metal, style and even the little details. This includes how high the diamond sits on the finger and how it feels after years of everyday wear.
Many couples also mention that they want the story behind the ring. By designing it together, you will remember choosing the stone, discussing sketches and seeing the 3D model for the first time.
Antwerp is a fantastic place to create your bespoke ring. Antwerp has been at the centre of the world’s diamond trade for many years. When purchasing a diamond, you can compare real diamonds in person rather than relying only on online images.
1. Free consultation
You may not have many ideas yet. Most people will have general ideas such as ‘simple’, ‘a bit of colour’ or ‘something similar to her grandmother’s ring but more modern’.
We will speak with you either in our showroom in Antwerp or online. We will ask you questions about your lifestyle, budget and how you would like your partner to feel when they see the ring every day. Do they regularly work with their hands? Do they prefer yellow gold or white metals? Do they wear a lot of jewellery or hardly any?
No pressure and no sales pitch. We will listen to your ideas. This initial consultation is free of charge and will give us a clear understanding of what you really want.

2. Choose the right diamond
We will begin by choosing the diamond. This will help guide the setting design.
You will view real diamonds (natural or lab-grown) in good lighting. We will explain the basics in simple terms. A diamond’s cut quality strongly influences its sparkle. The diamond’s colour appearance also depends on the stone, lighting and setting. “Eye-clean” means inclusions are not readily visible without magnification under normal viewing conditions.
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They differ in origin, formation and typical price. We will show you both options and be honest about the price difference. We will then let you decide which one fits within your budget and values.
Where available, your selected diamond will come with a grading report from GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI. You can review the report alongside the diamond.

3. Design the setting
Once you have chosen your diamond, we will design the ring.
We may start off by drawing some simple sketches and then create a 3D model to view on screen, where appropriate. You can change the metal type to yellow gold, white gold, rose gold or platinum. We can also adjust the band thickness, diamond height and finer details.
Some couples like a classic solitaire, while others like a three-stone ring, hidden halo or something completely unique. We will help you find a style that suits you. The ring must feel right for you.

4. Made by hand in our Antwerp workshop
Once you have approved the design, our goldsmiths will begin making the ring.
We use traditional goldsmith techniques and modern precision tools. The diamond will be set by an experienced stone setter. We will inspect the finished ring carefully.
Most bespoke rings take a few weeks to create. We will keep you updated throughout the process. If you would like to see the progress, we are more than happy to send you a photo or short video.

5. Inspection and aftercare
Once the ring is completed, you can come in to try it on. If you are far away, we will send you clear photos and a video. If any small adjustments are needed, we will discuss them with you.
We will explain the manufacturing warranty and aftercare arrangements applicable to your ring. An initial complimentary resizing may be available, depending on the design.
We offer insured international shipping to eligible destinations. Bespoke and personalised rings are excluded from the standard 14-day change-of-mind return policy; your statutory rights remain unaffected.
Things to consider before your first appointment
You don’t really need to do anything. However, if you can find out your partner’s ring size or borrow a ring they wear on that finger it will make things easier. Think about what budget you are comfortable with and save a few images of rings you like.
This helps us more than you may think. We will look at the style, lines and details that keep coming up. We use these to create something new but familiar.
